My Book Review!

This is the HYPERLINK to my book review!!

Oh my gosh I’ve never done a hyperlink by myself before this is exciting!

Sooo I filmed my book review on my phone and I was trying to email it to myself on my computer to post it there… Long story short it WOULD NOT send for some reason so I had to re-film it on my computer and THAT’S why it’s such bad quality. Sorry about that.

This Book Does Not Matter

For this blog we are supposed to persuade Mrs. Tinkham to keep our book on the list for next years students. I will not be doing this, because she should take the book off of the list. It is totally misleading for future students. Delana Libby and I chose this book because it seemed very interesting and we could read it together. We all thought we would really enjoy it! We thought that it would be easy to read. But no. Nothing is going on in “Lord of the Flies”. The only interesting part was when they first got on the island, and that lasted about a page. It is also confusing. The words aren’t hard to understand, but the text itself is. One second one person is talking, the next minute someone else is but you don’t know who! The whole thing is very frustrating. It hasn’t taught me a lesson so far, other than don’t crash a plane on a deserted island without adults. Mrs. Tinkham, take this book off of the reading list UNLESS you want kids to dread reading this novel.

Why they gotta be calling me Piggy???

Diary entry #6

We’ve been on the island for quite some time now. All the other boys are very stupid and self-centered. They only care about themselves. Yesterday we could’ve gotten rescued if the hunters kept the fire going on the mountain. But no. They went into the woods to get some pig. No one listens. If I were the chief then none of this would be a problem. We would deal with things logically, and I would keep things in order. The first thing we would do would be making shelters. Then we would have regular workers making and tending the fire to keep the signal going. After that I would assign people their jobs, alternating everyday to make sure people stay working and occupied. To make matters worse, all of the kids are mean to me. They all bully me and call me names and tell me to shut up. They judge me from the way I look and not by my brains. If they gave me a chance and weren’t so mean to me all the time then MAYBE things would be a little more organized here and a little less stressful. I am ready to go home, back to living with my Aunt. Then we could sit in the candy shop all day talking about this adventure I am on. I could tell her how all the kids are mean and she would make me feel better. Hopefully we will be rescued soon. See you tomorrow.

Allusions in “Lord of the Flies”

What do you know, the more unappealing part of my book has the most allusions in it!

In the second chapter, some boys are discouraged and missing home (especially the younger kids). Ralph was trying to get them all to work on shelters, fire, and hunting for food. To get them out of their funk, he was saying how this was just an adventure like in a book. A younger boy shouted out “Treasure Island” on page 34. Treasure Island was a book published on November 14, 1883. It is an adventure novel about pirates! When you think of a pirate, you think of crew on a ship led by a peg-legged captain. He has a parrot on his shoulder and a map in his hand with a big X where the treasure is. All of these popular perceptions came from this book.

Also on page 34, another child mentions “Swallows and Amazons”. Unlike Treasure Island, I have never heard of this book. It is the first book in a series written by Arthur Ransome. It is about two families’ kids that camp, fish, and boat together. It was published on December 1, 1930.

Why Can’t I Get Into This Book?

Okay, okay, I’m gonna be honest. This is one of the most boring books I’ve ever read. I don’t know why, but I just can’t get into it! It isn’t as action packed as I would’ve liked it to be. The whole way the book is written is kind of confusing, people are speaking and then it cuts them off with another paragraph, and you don’t know who was talking in the first place! I had really high hopes for this book! Maybe its just because I’m not super far into it yet and that’s why nothing much has happened yet. To sum up my book so far; some plane crashed on an island and the only survivors are kids. Then Ralph found this conch shell and blew it so everyone could come to one place. They elected a leader, and then three boys went off through the place to look for food, water, and discover if it really IS an island. Hopefully the more I read it will get more interesting! I’m gonna try and listen to an audio book to see if that helps?! I’ve never had to do that before but it’s worth a try.

Initial thoughts on “The Lord of the Flies”

Just before the book started, I assume the plane crashed on an island. This is a little disappointing because I like the suspense it builds, you knowing something is going to happen.

I read another book a few years ago called “The Raft”. https://books.google.com/books/about/The_Raft.html?id=PqV2mwEACAAJ&source=kp_book_description It was about a girl who was on a plane and it crashed and she was the only one who survived. One of the most action packed and interesting parts of that book was when the plane went down. I feel if William Golding would’ve written the plane crashing into the story, it would be more interesting right from the start.

The setting in my book is the island. If I were on the island, I would see lots of plane pieces that flew off during the crash. I would (hopefully) see other survivors as well.

Some facts about the book:

1. It was written by a dead white man.

2. It is in the genre of books that I am interested in reading.

3. I am very excited to read this!

Some opinions about the book:

  1. Very disturbing and gruesome.

2. Predictable, just your average plane crash story (different than the other opinion).

3. My opinion on this book so far is a little disappointed. As I explained, the beginning is a bit of a let down and not as exciting as i was hoping for it to be.

Why I am Reading “Lord of the Flies”

First blog yay! For my ninth grade Language Arts reading unit, I will be reading “Lord of the Flies” by William Golding. There were lots of books to choose from, but most of them sounded like things I wouldn’t be too interested in. I have always been interested in stories like getting stuck on a deserted island, shipwrecks, or plane crashes so this one should be an easy read for me!
